A teaching assistant's exact duties vary depending on the school and the age of the children, but would typically, include:

Preparation

  • arranging the classroom ready for lessons

Helping

  • listening to children read, reading to them, or telling them stories
  • aiding children who need extra support to complete tasks
  • playing educational games with children
  • encouraging younger children to learn through play

Supervising

  • managing art and craft activities and displaying work
  • caring for children who are upset or have had accidents
  • assisting with outings and sports events

Administrative

  • carrying out routine administrative tasks.

Remedial

  • assistants may also support children with particular individual needs, working one-to-one or in small groups.

Planning and Supervising

  • activities such as arts and crafts, music and cooking

Helping and Assisting

  • learning of number skills, e.g. counting games
  • reading stories and providing activities to develop language skills

  • managing children on outings

Observing and Reporting

  • observing children and writing reports on their progress
  • reporting any concerns
  • liaising closely with parents and giving them information on their child's development
  • recognising and being aware of health and safety to ensure children are safe at all times
